WaterFire happens a couple times a month during May - October in Providence, RI. One hundred bonfires are lit across the three rivers that pass through downtown Providence, brightening up two-thirds of a mile, as residents and visitors watch, listen to music, and eat street food. We checked it out in October on the night they happened to be doing a special breast cancer awareness program. Words can't do justice to how touching it was to see survivors carry torches during the final ceremony, and to read notes from victims' families that were lining the rivers.
WaterFire is truly beautiful and to get the full experience I suggest getting to town just before sunset. The city truly transforms from day to night, as the fires are lit in the water and music fills the streets.
