We didn't expect to see so many roaming animals in Costa Rica. We even acquired a house kitten during our stay in Malpais and affectionately called her Frijola. Every day on the beach we had the pleasure of the company of stray dogs and once spotted a band of runaway horses. We could always count on seeing a medium or large lizard crawling the trees near our house, which was a tad uncomfortable, seeing as our windows had no glass or screens. And, of course, there were monkeys in the treetops - too far to pet, but we snagged some pictures with the telephoto zoom lens.
