Montezuma Castle National Monument, AZ

Montezuma Castle National Monument was our first sight of cliff dwellings during our trip. And, wow. These particular dwellings were five stories high, took about five centuries to complete, and were occupied from 1100-1425 AD.

"This 20 room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a story of ingenuity, survival and ultimately, prosperity in an unforgiving desert landscape." - NPS

You can read more about the history of this dwelling here and here.

There is a good, small indoor museum at the park, with exhibits that tell the history of the dwellings.

We found a friend in the parking lot!
