Sundial Bridge | Redding, CA

We were so excited to cross the border into California!

Our first stop was in Redding, CA to see the Sundail Bridge (and to visit the local Trader Joe's, ha!). The Sundail Bridge is a pedestrian and biking bridge that crosses the Sacramento River and connects the north and south area of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The bridge is also the gateway to the 35-mile-long Sacramento River Trail. The park grounds are beautiful and lively, and we came just as the sun was setting and enjoyed a picnic at one of the tables on the other side of the bridge.

As you probably guessed from the bridge name, the bridge is also a Sundial. The bridge is a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge, and uses a 217 foot cantilever tower that points due north, set at a 42 degree angle, allowing it to cast a shadow on a large dial north of the bridge. It's a really cool thing to see and you can read more information about it here.
