Bend, OR
We ended up in Bend for a few days, not doing much of anything besides just generally enjoying the town and taking advantage of some downtime for ourselves.
Since we were enjoying some chill out time, I don't have very many photos to show from our days in Bend (well, except for the amazing hot air balloon festival). But what I lack in these iPhone pictures I make up for with enthusiasm for this town. We LOVED Bend. It always makes the list when people ask about our favorite stops of the trip.
So what makes Bend so cool? It is a bicycle and microbrewery haven. Which, as far as we're concerned, covers almost everything you need for a happy life. Taras even successfully completed the Bend Ale Trail! It doesn't hurt that the town is perfectly located on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range along the Deschutes River, meaning tons of easily accessible outdoor adventures like kayaking, hiking, fishing, and so much more. It's basically a dream town for all you cyclists, beer connoisseurs, and outdoorsy types out there.
Not to mention, Bend had some of the friendliest people we came across, and I gave the town bonus points for having a cute downtown with great restaurants!

Bend, OR | Hot Air Balloon Festival
We made our way from the coast back inland, to Bend, Oregon (more about the town in our next post!) and we happened to be in town during the Balloons over Bend hot air balloon and children's festival.
We woke up before the sun that next morning and drove over to Riverbend Park. We watched the balloon owners set up the balloons - rolling the canvases out of their trailers, filling the inside up with air, heating them up, etc. The flamethrowers were wicked cool - shooting fire bursts up to 10ft high into the balloons!
The moment of liftoff is pretty surreal - we got to watch a mere strips of fabric turn into a giant balloon, become weightless, pull the heavy basket up off the ground, and take flight... Then, one by one, they all took off - it was super cool to see all those colorful balloons floating into the sky.

Sequim, WA
We were so lucky that our friend Kristina let us know about the lavender region in the Dungeness Valley of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. There are lavender farms all around Sequim, WA, now called the "Lavender Capital of North America," and the region even hosts an annual lavender festival.
We got to Sequim on a rainy day but managed to arrive at Purple Haze Lavender in between drizzles - we had just enough time to pick our own lavender bouquet and explore the grounds before the rain started up again!
We loved Purple Haze - there's a great porch to relax on while taking in the view of beautiful rows of lavender (it's also a great spot to enjoy some lavender ice cream - so good). The onsite gift shop is full of great gifts and keepsakes, and we were happy to pick up a bunch of natural soap bars to bring home to our family and friends. The fact that it's a certified organic farm and everyone at the farm was super nice was just the cherry on top of that lavender ice cream.
